What is LAES?

LAES (Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies) is a very unique major, in that it is a collection of many, individual majors for students at the edge of what Cal Poly has to offer. Nearly every LAES student has a different individual education path in a specialized area by collaborating directly with Engineering and Liberal Arts professors. LAES students jumpstart their career with real world interdisciplinary work, collaborating with businesses and projects outside of academia.

My curriculum was designed so that I could study AI, a major not offered at Cal Poly. To my knowledge, I am the only graduate with such a major- a double individualized course of study in Machine Learning and Ethics in Technology. While at Cal Poly, I developed engineering proficiency alongside Computer Science undergrads and master students and a rigorous technical ethics education among the same in Liberal Arts.

I also achieved three minors in addition to my major: Math, Philosophy, and Computer Science, and rose to become President of the LAES club, directing its activities in my senior year, including winning the Cal Poly Club showcase for the first time in the club’s existence.

Study Abroad: Bangalore, India

As part of my education, I completed a semester at Christ University (CU) in Bangalore/Bengaluru, India. Owing to the legacy British naming of the institution, it’s worth mentioning that this university is actually a secular, tech-forward institution.

As one of the four international students at CU I studied Entrepreneurship, Politics of South East Asia, Hindi, Religions of India, and Caste, Class, and Gender. While in India I also completed an internship with the Center for Social Action, Bangalore and led PHD students in developing and shipping an app for FISA-B.

In all, I spent four months in India, most of which living in a a ‘PG’- the Indian version of a dorm among local college students. More of my experience in India is documented in the ‘Art, Travel and Adventure’ section.
